«“I have a fairly uniform brown complexion, erect forehead of reasonable amplitude, clear eyes and thick but well-modeled eyebrows. It would be difficult for me to describe the shape of my nose, because, it seems, it is neither snub, neither big nor sharp. All I know is that it is bigger than it is small and it goes down a little too much. As the shape of the face, either square or oval, but it would be very difficult to tell which one ... To talk about my character, I am melancholy, and I am so much so that in the last three or four years people have seen me laugh three or four times. I am intelligent and I have no difficulty saying it, but an intelligence ruined by melancholy, in fact, although I handle my language quite well, I have a good memory and not too much confusion in ideas, I am always so absorbed in my dark mood that I express rather badly what I want to say”.

Perhaps I would have to adopt too the meticulous descriptive technique of this seventeenth-century gentleman. Abound in detail, since the whole is elusive.»
